Rebuilding LA Together

An Evening of Collaboration, Conversation and Community

On September 22, Northern Wide Plank and Burdge Architects welcomed members of Los Angeles’ architecture, design and building communities to the Northern Wide Plank Los Angeles showroom for Rebuilding LA Together, an evening centered on collaboration, resilience and supporting the long-term recovery following the Palisades and Eaton Fires.

Interior designers, architects, builders, contractors, craftspeople, homeowners and members of the broader creative community gathered to connect, exchange ideas and consider an important question through an open roundtable discussion: how can the design and building community work together to support a resilient recovery?

The evening reflected a belief shared by Northern Wide Plank and Burdge Architects: meaningful rebuilding extends beyond individual homes and projects. It depends on homeowners, architects, designers, builders, trades and manufacturers working together to bring a project from an idea to completion.

A Conversation About Rebuilding

At the heart of the evening was an open roundtable discussion featuring Douglas Burdge (Founder of Burdge Architects); Jeannette Tang (Vice President, Director of Operations and Interior Design at Burdge Architects); Nathalie Dougé (Interior Designer at Burdge Architects); and Shawn Peebles (CEO of Northern Wide Plank). The conversation was moderated by Thomas Hayes (Founder of Thomas Hayes Studio).

The discussion explored the realities of rebuilding after a wildfire, from navigating building codes, insurance requirements, budgets and municipal approvals to the emotional impact of what has been lost. The panel emphasized bringing architects, designers, builders and other key partners together early, while helping homeowners balance rebuilding what was lost with rethinking how they want to live moving forward.

The panel also explored the role of interior materials in the planning process. Flooring can affect schedules, stairs, transitions, vents and other architectural details, making early specification especially important when custom elements are involved.

Together, these perspectives reinforced a central idea behind the evening: successful rebuilding requires considering the home as a whole and bringing the right people into the process early.

Giving Back to Los Angeles

The spirit of collaboration extended beyond the roundtable.

In conjunction with the event, Northern Wide Plank hosted a silent auction from September 15 through September 22, bringing together contributions from members of the design and creative communities.

The auction raised $4,380 USD, with 100% of the proceeds going to the American Red Cross Los Angeles Region to support the local community.
