What type of Finish is used on Northern Wide Plank hardwood floors?
Northern Wide Plank products use a Hardwax Oil (UV Cured or Air Dried). By using a Hardwax Oil finish, you can spot-repair any surface scratches and refresh your hardwood floors without sanding. In comparison, if you have a lacquer or urethane finish, in most cases it will scratch white due to the coating, which makes it more difficult to spot repair or refresh.

How do Northern Wide Plank engineered hardwood floors perform in high-traffic areas?
Northern Wide Plank engineered hardwood floors have been installed in countless high-traffic residential and commercial settings without any issues. Being a natural product, they are not indestructible and should be cared for to retain their natural beauty.

For commercial spaces such as restaurants, offices, and other high-traffic areas, an additional coat of our specialty hardwax oil is applied during the manufacturing process for all North American made products. This additional treatment provides the hardwood floor with a greater overall protection, making it more resistant to daily traffic and wear.
Are there specific products Northern Wide Plank recommends for high foot traffic areas?
Most Northern Wide Plank hardwood floors are suitable for high foot traffic areas. Character grade and other specific textured floors, as well as midtones perform well in these types of busy areas, as they tend to be more forgiving to scratches and marks.

All Northern Wide Plank floors use a Hardwax Oil finish to protect the floors from wear. For commercial grade products used in spaces with high traffic, an extra layer of Hardwax Oil is applied to our North American made products.

By using a Hardwax Oil, you can spot-repair surface scratches and easily refresh your hardwood floors, which could be more difficult for floors with other types of finishes.
What is the difference between select grade and character grade?
A Select grade hardwood floor provides a more clean appearance and refined look when compared to a character grade product. Select grade products tend to have less variation in colour and texture compared to a character grade product, with the occasional healthy small knot. Features which are typical characteristics of the wood are permitted in this grade.

In contrast to select grade, a character grade hardwood floor can provide a more relaxed feel and organic design. A character grade product has a very rich appearance with more natural variations in colour from plank to plank (depending on the product) when compared to a select grade floor. You will also find varying sizes and amount of knots throughout, along with small amounts of sapwood on some of the edges (for select Wixom products).

One of the benefits of character grade, is that it can hide wear and tear better than a select grade product. And in some cases, this would mean character grade may be better in high traffic areas.

Please contact a Northern Wide Plank flooring consultant for more information.
How many times can I sand and refinish Northern Wide Plank 20mm (¾”) hardwood floors with a 6mm wear (top) layer?
Due to Northern Wide Planks industry leading 20mm (¾”) thick wear (top) layer, our hardwood floors can be refinished 3 or 4 times. The only time you would want to sand and refinish Northern Wide Plank hardwood floors, is if you want to change the colour.
Are NWP hardwood floors ok with pets such as cats and dogs?
Yes. However, like any other hardwood floor product, Northern Wide Plank Hardwax Oiled floors are not indestructible and further care should be taken to avoid noticeable scratches and other marks.

The colour and grade should be considered when selecting a hardwood floor when pets are present. In general, lighter colours tend to show scratches less, due to the tone of natural wood. While character grade products hide scratches more easily due to the floors varying sizes and amount of knots, and its natural variations in colour.
What is the price per square foot for NWP engineered wood floor products?

What is a Foundry Surface?
Similar in texture to an original surface, a foundry surface has saw marks that are preserved on the boards from when they were sawn at the mill, creating an authentic industrial appeal.

A foundry surface can be described as original wood with a very rich appearance, maximum patina, and large variations in coloured texture. This grade can also be described as rustic wood, with rough knots, open grain, heartwood, and saw marks. Wood filler, inserted knots and other natural aging are permitted.

Can I use any cleaning product to clean my Northern Wide Plank hardwax oil finished floors?
No. You should not use cleaning products that aren’t made for Hardwax Oil floors. Northern Wide Plank floors are finished with a Specialty Hardwax Oil that penetrates the pores of the wood, strengthening and protecting them from within, which keeps the wood's natural characteristics.

For Northern Wide Plank Hardwax Oil finished floors, it is recommended to use NWP Floor Soap, which is a special cleaning concentrate for wooden floors with hardwax oil.
How often should I damp mop my Northern Wide Plank hardwax oil finished floors?
Damp mopping should only be done when required, depending on the traffic and the amount of dirt that accumulates.

For residential spaces once a week may be enough.

For commercial spaces such as bars, restaurants, offices, and other high traffic areas, it may be necessary to damp mop daily.

When damp mopping, do not flood wash or use too much water. This is a leading cause of the finish prematurely wearing and breaking down.
How do I clean stains on my Northern Wide Plank hardwax oil finished floors?
For any liquid and food spills, wipe them up as soon as possible with a clean damp cloth.

For general stains, use Northern Wide Plank Floor Soap, which is generally more effective on acidic related stains.

For more difficult stains such as grease or scuff marks, use NWP Wax Care to remove or diminish the stain. No water should be used with NWP Wax Care.

Stain removers should be used with care. Using too much or rubbing too hard can affect the surface finish and colour.

For more information, refer to our Cleaning and Care Guide https://books.northernwideplank.com/cleaning-and-care-guide-2023/?page=1
